WIM DE SCHAMPHELAERE

b. 1963, Belgium
Wim De Schamphelaere Biography

Wim De Schamphelaere is a Belgian photographer whose work documents his international travels. De Schamphelaere’s panoramic photographs act as entryways into entire villages or communities, capturing dozens of people in a single shot. De Schamphelaere travelled extensively, taking community portraits which divulge global yet intimate perspectives. He visited remote villages where eventually he was accepted into the original community. Eventually entire villages were proud to participate in these stunning images.

Working for eight years on the African continent, De Schamphelaere focused his attentions on a select few villages, living amongst the communities that he would later photograph. The resulting community portraits reflect an intimacy between the subjects and the artist, as well as a holistic view of the surrounding environment so wide that it physically exceeds that which would usually be available to the human eye. De Schamphelaere’s use of the most advanced photographic technology to capture these images invites the viewer to access a level of detail not previously possible in photography of this kind.

De Schamphelaere has exhibited extensively and held solo exhibitions in Latvia, Madagascar and Belgium.
“I’m using the photographic techniques of today, not to change the image of the current reality, but just to reproduce a true image of this reality in a way that was impossible in the past”.
