Press Release

Art Sonje Center presents Jeongsu Woo: Three Devils by the Bedside at The Ground from May 24 to June 30, 2024. Jeongsu Woo is an artist whose work has deconstructed and rejoined established narrative relationships as he refers to images from different eras, including Renaissance paintings, icons and historical motifs from medieval scriptures and philosophical texts, illustrations from genre fiction, and cartoons. Three Devils by the Bedside (2023–2024), which also provides the exhibition’s title, begins with the story of a medieval knight who suffered from insomnia for forty years due to three devils at his bedside, only to be miraculously cured when he encountered a monk at Canterbury Cathedral. This work shows the artist attempting to return more to the story by way of layers of characters against a backdrop of various patterned fabrics that are sewn together.

About the Gallery

The Art Sonje Center, founded in 1998, is a private art museum which supports current and experimental contemporary art. Although it is rather a young organisation which just has celebrated its fifth year, its international quality exhibitions and educational programs have been receiving attention by those in the art field and the general public alike. With an open attitude and the spirit to experiment with exhibition methods, we show art from ‘here and now.’ For this, we actively search for the opportunity to collaborate with those in the fields of music, literature, architecture, dance and fashion. We also have the mandate to provide radical exhibition planning to support new projects.
