Arthur Jafa’s 30-minute experimental film The White Album (2018) examines how visual media can transmit the “power, beauty, and alienation” of Black music in American culture. Following his critically acclaimed film Love Is the Message, the Message Is Death (2016), The White Album is a social critique of whiteness. Assembled from found and produced footage, the film collages digital media into a radical visual and literary mixtape that articulates the ways in which the vitality and survival of Black American people—their labor, ideas, and cultural output—are historically co-opted by white culture through coercion and violence.

About the Artist

Arthur Jafa is an American filmmaker, cinematographer and artist committed to the development of a visual language that propagates Black experience in both aesthetic form and content. His video work for the Venice Biennale in 2019 earned the artist a Golden Lion award.

The Hammer Museum at UCLA is an art museum and cultural center in Westwood, Los Angeles, known for an artist-centred and progressive programme of exhibitions and public events. Founded in 1990 by Dr Armand Hammer to house his collection of Old Master and modern works, the museum now connects these historical holdings with a dynamic contemporary programme and research-driven initiatives. Located on Wilshire Boulevard near the UCLA campus, the Hammer forms part of the university’s School of the Arts and Architecture and serves both local communities and an international art public.
