Le BAL is an independent platform for exhibitions, publications, ideas and education, centered on the contemporary image in all its forms – photography, video, film and the new media. Founded in 2010 by Raymond Depardon and Diane Dufour with the support of Mairie de Paris, it is a non-profit organization. In 2018, Christine Vidal was appointed co-director of the BAL.
Since 2008, Le BAL’s educational center, La Fabrique du Regard, has been working in-depth work to train young people in and through the image. In 11 years, 24,000 young people, 1,320 teachers, 550 artists and actors from the educational and cultural community in 275 neighbourhoods, from primary to high school, in schools or within social structures. The objective: to enable young people to think about the world in images, to train active viewers who are concerned by the profound upheavals in our societies.
