Séraphine Pick (b. 1964) is one of the most celebrated painters in Aotearoa. Over the course of her 30-year career, she has investigated the nuances of human experience through figuration and abstraction, producing characteristically ethereal compositions in a range of media including oil, watercolour, smoke, and ceramics.
Rider Instinct includes a large selection of works on paper from Pick’s prolific, rolling series’, which utilise a range of media including smoke, pencil, and gouache. Exhibited in conversation with these works is a new series of ‘combine paintings’, for which Pick assembles fragments from her studio through an intuitive process. For the first time, several of these works will be exhibited with ceramic components.
Séraphine Pick is one of Australasia’s leading contemporary painters, celebrated for her psychologically charged, dreamlike compositions that explore memory, identity, and the human psyche. Working in oil, watercolour, and mixed media, she blends figuration and abstraction to create worlds that feel both intimate and surreal.
