Australian Artist Emily Floyd Joins Ames Yavuz
The London, Sydney and Singapore‑based gallery has announced the international representation of the celebrated Australian artist, another in a succession of expansions for Ames Yavuz. Save to My Ocula
International gallery Ames Yavuz has revealed the addition of sculptor Emily Floyd to their roster.
Born and based in Melbourne, Floyd has become one of Australia’s preeminent sculptors with her sleek sculptures melding modernist and pedagogical ideals.
In describing her practice, Floyd says, ‘I always approach the making of an artwork from a position of learning, being curious about new ideas and embedding them into objects.’
The artist comes from a family of traditional toymakers, a heritage reflected in the techniques and aesthetics of her playful work.
The gallery will represent Floyd on an international scale, while longtime representative Anna Schwartz Gallery will continue to represent the artist in Australia from their Melbourne base.
While Floyd’s work is rooted in Australian history, the move signals a more global outlook for the next phase in the artist’s career. Floyd has regularly exhibited internationally in group shows–including currently in For Children, Art Stories since 1968 at Haus der Kunst, Munich–but she has yet to enjoy a solo exhibition outside of Australasia.
Later this week, Ames Yavuz will show a new sculpture by Floyd at Sydney Contemporary, the largest international art fair in the region. From October, the artist will also present a major new installation at the Singapore Biennale, which continues her Field Libraries bookshelf-sculpture series, originating with her commission for the 56th Venice Biennale a decade prior.
Floyd’s work can be found in major collections across Australia, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, as well as in the collections of London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum.
The gallery’s announcement comes on the heels of signing ceramicist Billy Bain just last month, and the major addition of a London site this past May. Ames Yavuz shows no signs of slowing down, having also put out a recent call to expand their London sales team.–[O]
