The fourth edition of art festival Hallen will take place in Berlin from 9 to 17 September. Some 25,000 people are expected to attend.
Hallen was started by Philipp Solf, Co-CEO of Wilhelm Hallen, and gallerist Alexander Levy in 2020 as a means to support Berlin galleries during the pandemic. It has only grown since.
Wilhelm Hallen, where the festival takes place, was formerly the Winkelhof iron foundry. Consisting of event locations, artist and photo studios, an art gallery, designers, and offices, the beautiful brick buildings are located near the Wilhelmsruh S-Bahn station in the north of the city.
Nineteen galleries, including Esther Schipper, Sies + Höke, and Galerie Thomas Schulte will exhibit across 9,000 square metres of exhibition space for the event’s fourth edition. The full list of participating galleries can be viewed here.
According to Solf, gallery presentations won’t be standardised or completely separated from ‘the real focus’, which is on ‘large installations, sculptures, inflatables—art that makes you go wow!’
Among featured works is Nik Nowak’s The Sound of the Multitude, a mammoth speaker system sound sculpture created from a shipping container.
Curators Claire Koron Elat & Shelly Reich (angels.sc3), whose practice explores the intersection of art and fashion, will present their exhibition No Angels, featuring artists Anna Uddenberg, Karl Holmqvist, and Martin Margiela.
Modern art museum Berlinische Galerie will present a series of videos, while Wilhelm Hallen residents Club Kokomo and Wolfgang Flad will open their studios to visitors.
Three collections will also share their works: Art Collection Telekom (more than 70 artists from east and southeast Europe), the nonprofit Art’Us Collectors Collective, and the HK-Art Collection.
Hallen 4 is an official partner of Berlin Art Week, which runs from 13–17 September 2023.One-day tickets to Hallen 4 cost €10 for adults and €7 for students and job seekers. They can be purchased in advance (with an additional booking fee) here. —[O]
