The first 20 artists have been announced for the third Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB), which opens from 22 October 2022 to 23 February 2023.
Artists Xu Zhen and Robert Mapplethorpe will make their debut appearances at the biennial, while Marina Abramović will return for the third time.
'Art is a path of hope in this chaotic world,' said Abramović in a press statement.
'We hope to find happiness and power through art at the Bangkok Art Biennale,' she said.
CHAOS : CALM will be curated by BAB's artistic director Apinan Poshyananda, art consultant Nigel Hurst, curator Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani, Gallery VER's Jirat Ratthawongjirakul, and creative consultant Chomwan Weeraworawit.
'Seeking a sense of calm in the midst of turmoil is a journey that offers knowledge and opportunity,' said Poshyananda. 'Experiences of stillness and tranquility can still be found in this post-pandemic world of seeming upheaval.'
The exhibition will test visitors' zen with works by Jake and Dinos Chapman, who are known for their abject sculptures and dioramas.
'The Bangkok Art Biennale invites artists to explore the dichotomy of CHAOS : CALM and express the nuanced tension between these two concepts that are seemingly at odds, yet continue to coexist in our daily lives,' Poshyananda said.
The exhibition will return to Bangkok's temples, including Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), and Wat Prayoon (Temple of Iron Fences). It will also inhabit the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), Museum Siam: Discovery Museum, a museum dedicated to the history and culture of the Thai people, and a new virtual space created specifically for digital artworks.
The other artists BAB announced this week are: Jarasporn Chumsri, Tiffany Chung, Jitish Kallat, Kimsooja, Rachel Kneebone, Nawin Nuthong, Be Takerng Pattanopas, Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, Alwin Reamillo, Arin Rungjang, Pinaree Sanpitak, Chiharu Shiota, Wantanee Siripattananuntakul, Myrtille Tibayrenc, Uninspired by Current Events, and Kennedy Yanko. —[O]
