Former Australian Pavilion artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino are back representing the country at the 2026 Venice Biennale after being taken off the job by Creative Australia back in February.

‘We accept this invitation and welcome the opportunity to represent our country on this prestigious international stage,’ the pair said in a statement, adding ‘this decision has renewed our confidence in Creative Australia and in the integrity of its selection process.’

In their words, the reinstatement will allow them to ‘move forward with optimism and hope after a period of significant personal and collective hardship’.

After Sabsabi and Dagostino were dismissed back in February, based on Australian media accusations of the artist’s work supporting terrorism, doubt arose as to whether Australia would find another artist to fill its pavilion after public backlash.

‘We would not have reached this point without the unwavering support of the Australian and international creative community, Sabsabi and Dagostino said. ‘This outcome would not have been possible without them.’

‘Through the process of creating and sharing new work, we hope to begin a path of healing and renewal,’ they said. ‘We extend our deepest and heartfelt thanks to everyone who has stood by us and look forward to sharing our work with you.’

The Venice Biennale is set to return from 9 May to 22 November 2026. —[O]
