M+ to Celebrate British Actress Tilda Swinton, and More

M+ in Hong Kong has revealed its 2025 film programme, which will pay homage to timeless talents, celebrate Indian film’s influence on global culture, and spotlight developments in moving image.
From 11 to 25 January, Tilda Swinton: Between Worlds will showcase significant works from the Academy Award-winning actress’ four-decade career, culminating in over 50 collaborations.
Films on view include early productions such as Joanna Hogg’s Caprice (1986), Derek Jarman‘s Caravaggio (1986), and Sally Potter’s Orlando (1992), as well as more recent works like Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) by Jim Jarmusch and The End (2024) by Joshua Oppenheimer.
Born into Scottish nobility in London in 1960, Swinton is recognised for her magnetic on-screen presence and remarkable versatility and range. Besides adopting myriad film personas, she narrated artist Isaac Julien‘s 2018 documentary Derek, which told the filmmaker’s story.
Other highlights at M+ include Colours of Life: A Celebration of Indian Cinema, which will present record-breaking productions like All We Imagine as Light (2024) by Payal Kapadia, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes this year, alongside classics like Salaam Bombay! (1988).
New releases to preview include Chui Tze Yiu’s Remember What I Forgot (2024), centring an Alzheimer patient and evoking bygone Hong Kong cinema, and Rumours (2024), a satirical portrait of world politics at a G7 meeting, featuring Cate Blanchett as a German chancellor.
Finally, Avant-Garde Now: Sensing Time—an M+ series that explores the latest developments in moving image practices—will invite artists Takashi Makino, Raqs Media Collective, Morgan Wong, and Wu Tzuan to screen and perform work related to the topic of time.
The programme foreshadows the Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival—a four-day celebration of moving image at M+—in May 2025. —[O]
