Belgium-born artist Kristof Santy finds the remarkable in the seemingly unremarkable. With some paintings evoking an almost cubist quality, his works pay homage to the aesthetics of Paul Klee, the Pop-Art movements, and 1960s and 70s cookbooks.
As the artist has explained, ‘My work is made of snapshots from everyday life, bringing banal objects to life. Painting these mundane elements is kind of a way to make them iconic’.
Philip Guston and Jean Brusselmans are two artists that have had significant influence on Santy’s practice, which offers an expressive take on his surroundings, including the artist’s large collection of folk art. An exhibition of the artist’s latest paintings, titled La Grande Bouffe, is now on view at Unit London.
