What we would do to turn back the clock and pull up a seat at the table with Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michael Andrews, and Timothy Behrens.
Sitting for John Deakin at 11 in the morning at Wheeler’s restaurant in Soho, the painters posed for a photoshoot for Queen magazine. Although the shoot was later rejected, the photographs have since resurfaced, and thankfully so, as it sets the scene for Gagosian‘s latest exhibition at Grosvenor Hill.
Friends and Relations: Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michael Andrews (17 November 2022–28 January 2023) curated by Richard Calvocoressi beautifully commemorates the relationships between these artists and their sitters, with some spectacular Freud works to look out for such as Reflection (Self-portrait) (1981–1982) and Girl in a Dark Jacket (1947).
