Press Release

Happy tenth birthday, A Thousand Plateaus Art Space!

2017 marks the tenth anniversary since the opening of A Thousand Plateaus Art Space. On Oct. 27th, the whole ensemble will put on an eponymous special exhibition, A Thousand Plateaus: Ten Year Anniversary. It will be a look back on the past ten years, an outlook for the future, and most importantly, a sincere and heartfelt tribute to all who have been supporting it through the years. As one of the most distinctive contemporary art institutes in China, A Thousand Plateaus Art Space has always been an active member in the global contemporary art communities, and has flourished under the care and patronage from all. Critical recognition and the ever spiraling expectations inform and inspire the art space about the social responsibilities it takes on and the historical context it resides in. Alongside the artists it represents and works with, it never ceases to reach for a new artistic and spiritual height. This time, in this special exhibition, the whole crew at A Thousand Plateaus Art Space hope to share with the audience works carefully chosen by artists, and to mark this moment with visual satisfaction.

The name A Thousand Plateaus is an attempt to capture the principles this art space upholds. It is an open-ended statement, from French philosopher Deleuze, meaning everyone is the plateau on their own planet. It advocates examinations of the social and personal histories on a case-by-case basis, and of elements that speak of the quality and the potential of contemporary art. To address the artistic questions from a more personal perspective, it could challenge all existing standards, and also prove an approach that is more down-to-earth and sustainable.

In the evolvement of Chinese art and culture, Chengdu, as well as the entire southwestern China, has produced a timeline marked by extraordinary achievements. Thus, as an effort that constitutes the core of its individuality, A Thousand Plateaus Art Space has been tracing and putting together the development of local art communities through exhibitions and academic research, celebrating the diversity shown in their artistic media and methods. Meanwhile, it has been searching for and supporting artists from a wider area, participating in the exhibitions and discussions of the highest caliber around the globe. This exhibition on the ten year anniversary is a comprehensive account of all these work, with twenty-one artists including Bi Rongrong, Chen Liangjie, Chen Qiulin, Chen Xiaoyi, Feng Bingyi, Feng Li, He Gong, Li Lang, Liu Chuanhong, Qi Lan, Shen Xiaotong, Wang Chuan, Wang Jun, Xiong Wenyun, Xiong Yu, Yang Mian, Yang Shu, Yu Guo, Zhang Xiao, Zhai Liang, and Zou Sijin. They represent the three pronged effort of A Thousand Plateaus Art Space: to scout for emerging artists, to continue to focus on and support the mid-career artists, and to conduct researches and literature reviews on established artists.

A Thousand Plateaus Art Space would like to use this occasion to express its gratitude to all friends, and hopes to see everyone here.
