Wang Chuan is one of the most important representatives of ‘Scar Art’ and ‘Existentialism Art’ in 1980s and 1990s. He described his early interest in abstract art as an obsession that bordered on the sadistic, and referred to his struggle between art and life as a solitary and searching journey. In the recent years, Wang’s works have truly become the records of a meditative life. Having closely encountered death (he was diagnosed with cancer a decade ago), the artist’s simple gestures such as racing a brushwork across the page shines with preciousness of life. “From the monumentality of structure to the fragility of a breezy line, Wang Chuan’s art enhances the richness of everyday experience by turning fleeting moments into landscapes of the mind”, as gallerist and art critic Johnson Chang puts it.
Born in 1953 and graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Wang Chuan has shown works in major institutions around the world, namely National Art Museum of China in Beijing (1980), the monumental ‘New Art from China: Post-1989’ exhibition in Hong Kong (1993), Herrenhof Mussbach Art Museum in Germany (1999), Guangdong Museum of Art (2000), Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong (2006), Today Art Museum in Beijing (2012) and Kunsthaus Hamburg (2012).
