Alzueta Gallery Madrid presents Materiales y Procesos, the second solo exhibition of Argentine artist Alejo Palacios (Buenos Aires, 1989). The exhibition will open on March 27th and run until April 28th.
Materiales y Procesos was one of the most significant subject Alejo Palacios did during his university studies, and the title pays homage to that formative period. Since then, his artistic practice has been centered on exploring different productive processes and materialities, developing an own language through the exchange of artisan’s knowledge.
This is the first exhibition in which Alejo Palacios brings a sculptural interpretation to his work, delving deeper into the realm of volume. The lost-wax technique is the method chosen for creating his sculptures, a process that involves modeling a piece in wax and then immersing it in plaster. Once the mold is dry, molten bronze is poured in to replace the wax, resulting in a unique bronze piece.
What characterizes this method is the direct connection between the artist and the material, with no intermediaries. Palacios uses his hands to create an immediate link between his imagination and the matter, granting him a unique creative freedom. By this way, the artist can modify and explore new configurations as the work transforms before his eyes, allowing for constant evolution and discovery.
In this exhibition, the three-dimensionality of the sculptures interacts with the essence of his usual work: his characteristic acrylic-painted patterns on wood or handmade paper. His work is defined by the search for organic forms, interaction with light, and balance between materials, creating contrasts that invite reflection, exploration of space, or simply pausing to contemplate.
His work is part of a tradition where experimentation and intuition play a central role, aligning with the vision of Eduardo Chillida.“For me, the work is both an answer and a question” affirmed the sculptor, for whom art should not emerge from certainty, but from the exploration of the unknown. In his artistic perception, “known works are born dead, and discovery is what, at times, can produce art.” Palacios’s practice also views each piece as an open question, a form of continuous dialogue with the material and the space.
Materiales y Procesos is the result of the artist’s constant exploration:“Experimenting with new materials is always a leap into the unknown, an emotion that combines uncertainty and enthusiasm. It is a process as unpredictable and fleeting as falling in love or having a first kiss”, Alejo Palacios reflects on his work.
His works catch the eye of the beholder. Alejo Palacios began his research by exploring with paper and Chinese ink. This simplicity and austerity of the elements with which he works can only give his work absolute strength and honesty.
