ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL is pleased to present Look, That Woman Sings and Dances, a solo exhibition of PARK Youngsook (1941–2025), from 25 February to 18 April, 2026. This is the first exhibition to be held following the passing of the artist, who left an indelible mark on the development of Korean contemporary photography and feminist art. The exhibition offers a retrospective reflection on the subjectivity of the ‘woman’ captured through PARK’s lens. Throughout her career, PARK challenged androcentric customs and irrational power structures by placing women at the forefront of her photography. Her work elevates women—who have long been objectified in the history of photography—into the authors of their own narratives and the subjects of their own voices. Liberated from socially prescribed identities, her women are summoned into the gallery space to re-examine and redefine themselves.

PARK Youngsook (1941-2025) studied originally History at the Sookmyung Women’s University where she also completed her graduate studies in Photography and Design. She began to exhibit photography works in 1966 and her then extraordinary female awareness was visualized in a certain exhibition, in 1975. It was her solo exhibition organized by ‘Women’s Association’ to commemorate ‘International Women’s Year’, established by the United Nations. PARK exhibited various photographs subjectifying social issues including women’s reality today under the theme of <equality, peace and love>. From 1981 she continues to be bold and active with her stature as a feminist at the age of 40. From 1992 she is marked as feminism activist to become a member of ’Women Art Research Association’, a feminist group affiliated with ‘Minjung Art’ (mass people’s movement).
ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL opened its doors in Sogyeok-dong in 2006. Since then, it has established its foothold as a leading contemporary art gallery in Korea and across Asia, continuing to be at the forefront of the international art scene through its efficient representation system and bold exhibitions. In March 2014, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL relocated near the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In April 2018, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL RYSE HOTEL, a second exhibition space in Seoul, opened in the Hongdae area. Running concurrently with its primary location until November 2019, the project space aimed to mirror the experimental spirit of the neighbourhood through its innovative programming. In 2022, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL ended its Sogyeok-dong era. However, the various experimentation and ventures carried out in the gallery’s previous spaces continue to shape its future at its current location in Wonseo-dong, which reopened in February 2023. Through the preemptive discovery of young artists, steady support of represented artists, and the realisation of meaningful and original exhibitions, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL aims to continually grow and contribute to the growth of the contemporary art scene in Korea.
