Press Release

What is the essence of painting? I want to witness the moment a painting is first born into this world.

A question reflects a longing to experience the precise moment when a painting first comes into being. A painting originates from chaos—a state in which everything is entangled, unformed, and compressed with immense energy. Then, breaking through the chaos like an explosion, a painting reveals itself. Choi has named this ontological inquiry into the existential meaning of art ‘Mumool’ (無物, Nothingness and Objecthood). He continues his work in silent patience, waiting for what is yet to be (Moo, 無) to manifest itself (Mul, 物).

BAIK Art Jakarta is pleased to present Mumool, an exhibition by Choi Sang Chul who is Standing before the infinite possibilities of the unknown, Choi continues his practice in silence—not desiring, but responding. Through his work, one encounters the world of Korean contemporary abstract art—a world that does not emerge through assertion, but through surrender to what is yet to be revealed.
