Press Release

Following the success of our recent presentation at Art Basel Hong Kong, this exhibition brings together paintings from several of Colin McCahon’s most formative stages and will reflect the significance of a home-grown artist, whose stature in Australasia can only be compared to the influence that artists such as Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko had on American art. Spanning two decades of his career - from 1958 to 1977 - the show documents the scope of the artist’s evolving concerns: the relationship between Maori and the New Zealand landscape, as well as the influence of early settlers and their beliefs on this revered land.

Coinciding with this exhibition, Gow Langsford Gallery has published an accompanying illustrated catalogue. Contact the gallery to purchase a copy.

About the Artist

Colin McCahon is recognised as New Zealand’s most significant artist of the 20th century, exploring questions of spiritual faith and religious doubt for more than 40 years. McCahon was largely self-taught, influenced by Romanticism and then Abstract Expressionism. His earliest mature works were produced in the years following World War II and depicted religious events relocated into the New Zealand landscape and influenced by early Italian Renaissance painters such as Giotto.
