Lawrie Shabibi presents Formas Desplazadas (Displaced Forms)—Lima-based sculptor Ishmael Randall Weeks’ (b. 1976, Cusco) first solo exhibition in London. In his works, Randall Weeks modifies industrial and organic materials, and environmental debris (concrete, clay, copper, steel, discarded books, glass) to create sculptural objects and architectural spaces that seize on issues of urbanization, transformation, regeneration, and collapse.
Drawing formally from the pre-Columbian world (the archaeological ruin, the huaca), Colonial times (the Hispano-Moresque balconies from Lima, the tapadas limeñas), modern art history (Russian Constructivism and Suprematism, Brazilian Neo-Concretism) and modernist architecture (Bauhaus and Mexican modernism), his sculptures and two-dimensional works constitute a world that emerges from history and memory, projecting an imaginary window where temporal and geographical distances break down.
Ishmael Randall-Weeks was born in Cusco, Perù in 1976. He received a Bachelor’s of Art degree from Bard College, graduating in 2000 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2007.
Lawrie Shabibi is a Dubai-based contemporary art gallery that presents work by international artists, with an emphasis on contemporary Middle Eastern, North African and diaspora art.
