Born in Niigata Prefecture in 1965, Makoto Aida completed the graduate program at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1991. Renowned for freely traversing boundaries between society and history, contemporary and pre-modern, and Western and Eastern cultures, through subjects including beautiful girls, war paintings, and salarymen, Aida’s work offers unconventional contrasts and sharp critiques. This has garnered him overwhelming support from diverse generations both domestically and internationally. His artistic expression spans a wide range of media, including painting, photography, video, sculpture, and performance.

Executive Director Sueo Mizuma established Mizuma Art Gallery in Tokyo in 1994. Since then, the gallery has continuously presented artists from Japan and, increasingly, from the surrounding region whose works demonstrate distinctive sensibilities, unaffected by fleeting stylistic trends.
