Press Release

As part of the 2024 Art Basel Paris Premise sector, Sies + Höke is pleased to present a group of photographs by Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke exploring the creative use of multiple exposures. Although neither of the two artists are primarily known for their photographic work, both have embraced photography for visual experimentation: the layering of distinct photographic images as a technique highlights a sense of controlled chance, a significant element in both artists’ work.

Richter’s artistic practice is intricately linked with photography—‘it is indeed inconceivable without it,’ as Dieter Schwarz surmises. Having employed photographs as a conceptual tool early in his career, creating blurred paintings based on photographic images, Richter later used the camera as a tool for visual experimentation. Sigmar Polke’s photographic oeuvre, though little-known, reflects his inventive spirit, blending elements of alchemy, mock-mysticism, and hallucinogenic effects. The two artists met as students at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1962 and initially shared a close artistic and personal bond, inspired by artistic developments in New York, London, and Paris.
