Press Release

Coinciding with Frieze Seoul 2025, White Cube and Thaddaeus Ropac present a two-part exhibition by Antony Gormley, marking the artist’s first solo presentation in the city.

Titled ‘Inextricable’, the exhibition responds to the reality that more than half of the global population now live within an urban matrix. It raises the question of whether art can serve a meaningful purpose in examining the freedoms and constraints shaped by the urban landscape and their impact on the body. As Gormley notes, ‘the relationship between humanity and the city has become inextricable to the point where this world now builds us. The works in this exhibition are diagnostic instruments that help us examine this condition.’

On view at White Cube are sculptures from Gormley’s ongoing ‘Blockworks’, ‘Bunker’ and ‘Beamer’ series, which transform the body through the syntax of the built world.

Alongside this display, the works shown at Thaddaeus Ropac comprise sculptures from the artist’s ‘Extended Strapworks’, ‘Cast Knotworks’ and ‘Open Blockwork’ series, interrogating our internal condition and its connection to architectural space.

About the Artist

Antony Gormley is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human beings stand in relation to nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise.
