White Cube is pleased to announce an exhibition of work by Léon Wuidar. Born in 1938 in Liège, Belgium, Wuidar has explored geometric abstraction for over 60 years, citing the ruined bridges, stark military and Brutalist architecture from his childhood, and synthesising these structural vocabularies with the concerns of Concrete Art. Predicated on a series of dualities between symmetry and asymmetry, hard-edged and soft-edged shapes, and bold and neutral colours, Wuidar’s paintings play on the harmony and formal precision of the built world. Through a process of overlaying and interlocking, his compositions evoke multiple depths and perspectives, as if the viewer is looking through overlapping architectural structures towards a distant point.

Léon Wuidar’s abstracted representations of the world around him are masterfully conceived; harmonised in their balance of shapes and colours, distinguished by a formal precision and animated by a subtle humour. Dedicating over six decades to this artistic practice and maintaining a steadfast commitment as a student and educator of his exacting process, Wuidar has emerged as a virtuoso of geometric abstraction. Now in his mid-80s, Wuidar’s work testifies to a lifetime of painterly exploration and the preservation of a unique presence that, as Hans Ulrich Obrist has noted, arises from ‘radical simplicity and extreme subtlety’.

An international art powerhouse, White Cube was established in 1993 in London by art dealer Jay Jopling. In its space on Duke Street, it served as the early exhibition venue for many now internationally acclaimed British artists, including Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George, Rachel Kneebone and Antony Gormley, who still show with the gallery today.
