White Cube is pleased to present a new exhibition by Theaster Gates at Mason’s Yard, coinciding with the Whitechapel Gallery’s A Clay Sermon (29 September 2021 – 9 January 2022).
Part of a multi-venue presentation across London dedicated to Gates’ practice working with clay, the White Cube selection includes new works made at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Montana, and an accompanying film which focusses on the history of clay in the UK, US and Japan.
The research for these projects has been developed in conjunction with the V&A South Kensington and V&A East, where Gates has been Emeritus Fellow at the V&A Research Institute (VARI). An intervention in the V&A’s Ceramics Galleries opens this autumn.
As part of the same project, next year Gates will conceive the 2022 Serpentine Pavilion, an annual architectural commission and platform for live summer programmes.
Theaster Gates’s practice includes sculpture, installation, performance, urban intervention and land development. Through his work as an artist, archivist, and curator, Gates seeks to instigate the creation of cultural communities by acting as catalysts for social engagement that leads to political and spatial change.
An international art powerhouse, White Cube was established in 1993 in London by art dealer Jay Jopling. In its space on Duke Street, it served as the early exhibition venue for many now internationally acclaimed British artists, including Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George, Rachel Kneebone and Antony Gormley, who still show with the gallery today.
