Alexander Gronsky Biography

Alexander Gronsky's work focuses on landscapes. Abandoned and quiet, they offer a reflection on the impact of the environment on local populations. “These zones are neither urban, nor rural. They are nondescript places.” In 2010 and 2011, Gronsky visited the edges of China’s megacities: Shanghai, Chongqing, and Shenzen, where the restlessness creates a disorder nearing chaos. Mountains & Waters (2011) is a series of large-format diptychs in which the photographer applied a Chinese conception of landscape more intellectual than descriptive. The diptychs enlarge the field of vision and respect the duality of Chinese beliefs through dichotomies such as fullness and emptiness, matter and its absence, mountains and waters. In Chinese, the word landscape is composed of two ideograms: mountain and water.

Alexander Gronsky regularly contributes to magazines such as Foam, Stern, Spiegel, Ojode Pez, Art+Auction, Intelligent Life, Esquire, Afisha, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, Geo and M, Le Monde.
