Haindoo ( 1930 - 1989 ) was a first - generation modern Korean artist who graduated from art school after Korea gained independence from Japan . He was a founding member of the Association of Contemporary Artists and was regarded as a painter who broadened the field of abstract art in Korea. In 2020 the ‘Haindoo Art Award’ was established after his name.
Haindoo notably presented colour field paintings based on Buddhist outlooks . He used words from Buddhist literature as titles for his artworks, such as Hwe, Yoon, Milmun, and Mandara. Also, in search of the ‘root of Koreanness’, Haindoo explored Buddhist, dancheong, folk, and shamanic paintings. He also participated as a founding member of the Korean Artists Association and devoted himself to the informal and abstract expressionist movements .
