Hu Qingtai, born in 1985, Heilongjiang Province. He received his BA degree from the New Media Department at China Hubei Academy of Fine Arts in 2008. Hu’s artwork primarily explores human relationships with objects, as well as relationships between human beings, focusing on the individual’s will and mental activity. He interrogates established notions of art and artist identity through appropriating common social transactions. His works span a range of mediums, including performance, video, sculpture and painting.
HU Qingtai exemplifies how young people shape themselves in a way that is both witty and repressive by attempting to become an artist via eliminating his own personality. Qingtai, the Most Beautiful Colour Is Yellow (a comment by the artist’s mother) is composed of 17 paintings and a statement. “I tried to convince myself that yellow is the most beautiful color by repeatedly painting with yellow like mad, hoping the idea would become the truth through self-brainwash and self-reassurance.” Here, HU’s video Extreme\ Serious\ Stubborn\ Unsociable can be taken as a cross reference. His Purchasing Art Project involves purchasing art work ideas from peer artists at the lowest costs and realizing the works himself. The latest work of this project Painting Works of Wang Guangle in Li Shurui’s Style has a further conceptual transition, and thus the identity of HU seems to be submerged completely by those of others.
