JARED OWENS
Jared Owens (b. 1968, Queens, NY) is a Manhattan-based artist who works with a variety of media including oils, acrylics, ceramics and reclaimed materials. Incarcerated three times, in three states, and under three jurisdictions, Owens developed his artistic practice in prison by studying art magazines and books, critics’ reviews in newspapers and encyclopaedias and by collaborating with fellow prisoners. Owens was released from federal prison in 2013.
Owen’s work has been included in several institutional exhibitions including Rendering Justice at the African American Museum of Art in Philadelphia, O.G. curated by Jesse Krimes and Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration at MoMA PS1, curated by Dr. Nicole Fleetwood. Owens was also featured in The O.G. Experience, in partnership with the SOZE Agency and HBO. Previous gallery exhibitions include Martos Gallery (New York, NY), Little Berlin Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Mitchell Hill Gallery (Charleston, SC). Owens has received a Restorative Justice grant from Philadelphia Mural Arts in 2019 and Right of Return and Silver Art Projects Fellowships.
