Josiane M.H. Pozi is a filmmaker and visual artist, creating lo-fi video works presenting vignettes of the mundanity of everyday Black English life yet also depicting emotional connection, whether that’s between Pozi and her father, or with the friends and other family members who star in her works.
Josiane M.H. Pozi was born in London in 1998 and by the time she gained her BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, her work had already featured in a solo exhibition in New York City. Growing up in an on-screen world, her artistic practice presents a first-person perspective on ordinary situations.
Speaking in 2021, Pozi described her approach to making videos as “the most selfish thing”, capturing emotion in a limited timeframe rather than creating a moving image in a particular style. Referencing the concept that capitalism encourages people to abandon their own personal creativity in favour of maintaining financial and social capital, she explained that she considered success to be the opportunity to create her own ideas.
Yes, Josiane M.H. Pozi has written plays that bring to the fore the mundaneness of language, including 2023’s MC about a house party, and a 2025 piece from Flash Art that inserts a review of United Kingdom London. Portrait OAYG into dialogue between Josiane and her sister Emily.
Josiane M.H. Pozi’s videos spotlight quotidian scenes, featuring her relationship with her father, life with her sister Emily or interactions with friends. In a world where millions consciously or subconsciously perform for social media, Pozi offers a perspective that spans both the truthfulness of daily life and the sometimes gimmicky nature of content creation.
A strong example of Pozi’s use of sculptural installation is in her 2025 exhibition Through my fault, in which viewers accessed a multi-screen video installation via steps and were guided through the space by benches, carpeting and wall-hung works. The central video featured sings as well as dialogue.
