Lê Hiền Minh Biography

Lê Hiền Minh’s work centers on the female experience and the complex connections between the cultural and sociohistorical forces that impact contemporary life. Minh is known for her sculptures and large-scale installations produced using traditional Vietnamese handmade dó paper, bringing the centuries-old custom into a modern context. She often draws from the rich tapestry of Vietnamese culture, including the diversity of deities that safeguard particular aspects of everyday life, such as the kitchen god and goddess believed to watch over daily activities of the home.

By incorporating symbolism associated with the female body and the nail-care industry, Minh actively challenges conventional perceptions of Asian women, particularly those viewed through a Western lens. This exhibition includes a video work as well as new sculptural works cast from dó paper. A highlight of the show is a sculpture of a rifle used in the Vietnam War studded with elongated fingernails addressing violence and exploitation of women.

Minh has exhibited across Asia and the West, including at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, Vietnam; Art Omi, Ghent, New York; and the Moving Laboratory of Public Arts, Helsinki, among others.
