LLOYD REES

1895-1988, Australia
Lloyd Rees Biography

Lloyd Rees is one of Australia’s most respected landscape artists and was selected in the country’s Bicentennial year (1988) as one of 200 people ‘Who Made Australia Great.’ Rees’ painting is characterised by his preoccupation with the effects of light on the landscape with the artist altering his palette accordingly, revealing an affirmative vision of humanity’s relationship with the natural environment.

Rees attended the Technical College Art School from 1915, achieving early recognition with three of his works acquired by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1917. He resided permanently in Sydney from 1934, but travelled regularly to Europe over the next 50 years.

Rees maintained that his painting was firmly grounded in his drawing skills in watercolours, pencil, pen and ink, and charcoal. His sensitivity to the subtlety of light and his commitment and passion for the environs of Sydney are distinct in Australian art, capturing both the grand vision of the landscape and the experience of being in it.

In 1984 he was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Tasmania and in 1985, a Companion of the Order of Australia. Rees’ work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth.
