Nina Gehl is an American painter best known for her choice in medium, working with ashes, including wood from fireplaces and even cremated animal remains. However, her intention is hardly sinister, even if it seems macabre on the surface. Often painting images of young women or subject that relates directly to the origin of the media being used, Gehl utilises the ashes as a symbol of celebration and respect, the soft, hazy texture of the ash/oil blend giving the works an air of thoughtfulness and certainly a greater degree of depth, channelling the strong emotions we place on objects that remind us of loved ones passed.
