PETER MARRALWANGA
1916-1987, AustraliaSenior Kunwinjku artist Peter Marralwanga’s (c.1916–1987) repertoire reflected the depth of his cultural knowledge and the experiences that shaped his life. Exchanges with renowned artists including Yirawala, who taught him Mardayin ceremony, informed a practice that balanced ceremonial responsibility with formal experimentation, producing figurations of djang ancestral beings that have become among the most distinctive in West Arnhem Land bark painting.
As a cultural leader and mentor to younger artists, Marralwanga played an important role in the transmission of cultural knowledge across generations. His work continues to enrich understandings of a world in which ancestral beings and elemental forces such as Namarrkon remain active within Country, present in the charged atmosphere of the wet season, in flashes of lightning and heavy rains, and in the renewal that follows.
Major works by Marralwanga are held in significant national collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin.
