Qiu Xin’s works seem to bear a resemblance to his person, this bulky, bodybuilding artist’s canvases are all enormous; even moving them around the studio is a physical feat. Qiu Xin says that he was a frail little boy, which causes the desire for strength to permeate him to the very core.
Qiu Xin’s infatuation with strength is not only demonstrated in the size of his works, it penetrates even deeper to influence his choice of subjects. In paintings Bulldozer, Apache, and Maritime Dreams, these immense and domineering machines become composite embodiments of power and freedom; the fierce image of the man in Valiant Display brings his worship of masculine power to a higher extreme. Direct visualizations of fierce power manifested through crude brushstrokes and oppressive size make associations with a pubescent restlessness unavoidable. Even so, behind this aggressive presentation, we can still feel a tinge of the artist’s apprehension and voice aching to be heard.
Despite his extremely distinctive personal characteristics, Qiu Xin hates being labeled as any kind of “style,” he thinks that being defined too early is detrimental to one's creativity. For Qiu Xin, every work until now has been an exploration, an experiment, he’s sure the future will bring endless possibilities. Perhaps he's joking, but Qiu Xin frankly admits, much of the reason that he chose painting stems from vanity, and the desire to prove his own degree of impulse. Even if the path that led him to choose art sounds a little absurd, such expressions helps Qiu Xin to excavate the true needs of his inner being.
