SONG YONGHONG

b. 1966, China
Song Yonghong Biography

Song Yonghong was a participant of the '85 new Wave Movement, alongside leading Chinese artists Fang Lijun, Zhang Xiaogang, and Zeng Fanzhi. Considered a influential proponent of Cynical Realism, his works are characterised by their apathetic and detached style. Reflecting the sense of alienation of mid 1990s China, his most well known works depict the grotesquely distorted faces of the masses, ridiculing and provoking at once. Yet fundamentally, Song does not believe that art can sufficiently represent the essential truth within the artist, often deviating and producing contradictory meanings within his own work.

Song Yonghong recieved his BFA from the Zhejiang Art Academy in 1988.
