Tomas Esson (b. Havana, Cuba: 1963) lives and works in Miami, Florida. From his very firstexhibition in Havana, Cuba in 1988, which was censored and closed by Cuban authorities,Esson has developed a major body of expressionist paintings, emerging as one of the mostdynamic voices of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora. As he became a central figure in the decade’srenaissance in Cuban art, his work was showcased in a number of controversial exhibitions andhe began to exhibit internationally. In 1990, he left Cuba to live in Miami and New York City,where he has prolifically produced and exhibited work. In 2020-21, Esson was the subject of a30-year career retrospective The GOAT held at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.
