Tomás Saraceno Biography

Tomás Saraceno is renowned for his visionary projects that imagine a future airborne life. He has collaborated with many scientists to develop innovative ideas and materials. For example, he initiated the first digital scanning of three-dimensional spider webs, the research that resulted in his 14 Billions installation, presented at Bonniers Konsthall in 2010. His ongoing Cloud Cities project includes large-scale installations and smaller sculptures. The vision of a sustainable flying city is inspired by morphology of soap bubbles, spider webs, cellular structures and astronomical diagrams. The works often are constructed from a combination of readily available and highly specialised materials (iridescent foil, flexible solar panels, high-density polyethylene sheeting, polyester cords, but also plywood, mirrors, fishing line, and aluminum).

VENICE, Italy — Acqua alta : high water. It's something Venetians have learned to live with, when the city floods under high tides and strong winds. It mainly happens in the winter, but even under the mild May sunshine, the crowds sipping coffee in Saint Mark's Square will sometimes get their feet wet. At these times, the lines between...

Shanghai gold rush part one: West Bund Art & Design Related Press Shanghai gold rush part one: West Bund Art & Design 29 November 2016, RanDian

West Bund is in a remote bit of Xuhui, a long way away from the Waitan (the Bund). It was once devoted to heavy industry and even had an airport, but now it’s an 8 km-stretch of arts precinct and the former aircraft factory is an art fair pavilion. The leases though are only for 5 years and the condos are already encroaching. Only 5? Yes, but...
