TONY LANE

In 1975 he was included in Three Wellington Painters at Peter McLeavey Gallery, Wellington, and in 1976 he had his first solo exhibition at Elva Bett Gallery, Wellington. Lane was awarded grants from the Queen Elizabeth 11 Arts Council in 1978 and 1984; the latter he used to travel to Europe and the United States. In 1988 he returned to Europe, living in Rome and traveling through Spain and Portugal. He was selected for the inaugural Moet and Chandon Award Finalists exhibition in 1989 and the following year he was awarded a Goethe Institute scholarship to study the German language. He spent this time in Berlin and concurrently worked in the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Kreuzberg, Berlin.

1992-94 saw the international tour of Distance Looks Our Way: Ten Artists from New Zealand to the International Pavilion at Expo in Seville, the Conde Duque in Madrid , and public galleries in Barcelona and Zamora,the Netherlands and New Zealand. In 1995 Lane had a solo exhibition with Peter Bonnier Gallery in New York. In 1997 and 2006 in London and in 1999 in Gstaad, Switzerland, he had solo shows with Dreamtime Gallery, London. In 2001 he had a solo exhibition with Tim Olsen Gallery in Sydney and in 2002 a solo exhibition with Galleria Camilla Hamm in Barcelona.

In 2006, City Gallery, Wellington, held a survey exhibition of his work, entitled Practical Metaphysics. This was accompanied by an extensive catalogue. In 2007 and 2008 his paintings were part of an exhibition Ultramarte, that traveled to Valencia, Palma de Mallorca and Hong Kong, as well as a number of venues in New Zealand. In 2008, also, the Tauranga City Gallery showed a survey exhibition entitled From Aongatete. This exhibition toured a number of New Zealand Public Art Galleries. He has exhibited extensively in New Zealand and internationally and is currently represented by Mark Hutchins Gallery, Wellington and Nadene Milne Gallery, Arrowtown.

In 2010 a book of his current paintings entitled Echoes: Recent paintings of Tony Lane was published in both English and Spanish by Blurb Books. This was followed by Transformations in 2011 and most recently Geomorphology, a record of an exhibition at Mark Hutchins Gallery, in 2012. His paintings are in many public and private collections in Europe, the United States and New Zealand. In 2002 he moved to Auckland, New Zealand. He currently resides there and in Campanet, Mallorca.
