Yamini Nayar Biography

Yamini Nayar (b.1975, Detroit. Lives and works in New York) integrates photography, sculpture and architecture to create complex visual riddles, which take the final form of photographic documents. Her works begin with handmade sculptural and wall-based assemblages, which, although built intuitively, cannot be separated from her long-standing interest in architecture and the psychological dimensions of space. Once in the camera’s crosshairs, the sculptures come into being. Foregrounding process and the ‘holding’ aspects of the built environment, Nayar considers time, event and the body as materials to manipulate and distort the material with the immaterial.

Yamini Nayar received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 2005, and her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999.

Her work has been exhibited in landmark international exhibitions, most recently at the Le Recontres De La Photographie, Arles (2022); Art Institute of Chicago (2022); deCordova Museum, Massachusetts (2020); Logan Gallery, University of Chicago (2016); Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2015); Contemporary Art Museum, University of South Florida (2015); Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (2015); QueenslandArt Gallery, South Brisbane (2012); Sharjah Biennial, UAE (2011); Saatchi Museum, London (2010); and Queens Museum of Art, New York (2005).
