Videotage is a leading Hong Kong–based non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion, presentation, creation and preservation of video and media art. Founded in 1986 as an artist-run collective, it has evolved into an influential network that supports artists using moving images and digital media to address technological, social, cultural and historical questions.
Since 2001 Videotage has been based at Unit 13, Cattle Depot Artist Village in To Kwa Wan, a former slaughterhouse complex that has become one of Hong Kong’s key clusters of independent art spaces. From this base, the organisation organises exhibitions, screenings, festivals, workshops, performances and international exchange programmes, often foregrounding experimental and underrepresented practices from Hong Kong and across the region.
Videotage’s activities range from thematic exhibitions and single-artist projects to the long-running FUSE residency programme, which brings overseas and local artists, curators and researchers into dialogue around media art. Collaborations with institutions in Asia, Europe and North America extend these projects into film festivals, biennials and museum contexts, while education and outreach initiatives introduce younger audiences to moving-image work.directory.
A cornerstone of the organisation is the Videotage Media Art Collection (VMAC), launched in 2008 as an offline and online archive of Hong Kong video and media art. VMAC holds historically significant video works, analogue media artefacts, documentation and ephemera, providing rare insight into the development of media art and independent cultural history in the city from the 1980s onwards.
