Art Basel will debut its fifth global fair in Doha in February 2026, marking a strategic expansion into the Middle East’s budding art market.
The inaugural Art Basel Qatar will occupy M7 creative hub and Doha Design District in the Msheireb downtown area.
Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz said that the expansion reflects the brand’s commitment to ‘growing the global art market, supporting artists and galleries, and developing new collecting audiences’.
‘We are compelled by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s singular vision for the arts ecosystem in Qatar, and we share a commitment to supporting artists in realising their highest potential,’ he said.
The inaugural edition will feature a ‘tightly curated’ selection of around 50 international and regional galleries, positioned to capitalise on the Middle East and North Africa region’s growing collector base.
The Qatar fair is a partnership conceived by Art Basel with Qatar Sports Investments and QC+, a Qatari enterprise specialising in cultural commerce, to align with Qatar National Vision 2030’s cultural development goals.
Under Sheikha Al Mayassa’s leadership as chairperson of Qatar Museums, the country has made strides toward becoming a global cultural hub through initiatives like the forthcoming Art Mill Museum and Lusail Museum, and the permanent national pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
The Doha edition joins Art Basel’s existing portfolio of fairs in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Paris. —[O]
