Barcelona Video Fair to Beam Artworks Directly into Busan Hotel Rooms
By Elaine YJ Zheng – 24 April 2025, Busan

Barcelona video art platform Loop will bring its distinct approach to exhibiting new media art to Busan, South Korea, this April with a selection of works screened directly into hotel rooms.

Loop Lab Busan Fair will showcase work by 25 galleries in rooms at the Grand Josun Busan Hotel from 24 to 26 April.

The arrangement aims to ’[create] an environment focused on the artists’ work that provides the specific attention [the video] medium requires’, according to Loop.

Organised with digital art platform A-Fluxion, Busan Museum of Art, and local government, Loop Lab Busan will host a concurrent art fair, forum on digital art collection, and public exhibitions in a bid to advance the city’s reputation as a ‘key centre for digital creativity’.

Loop Busan co-director Amy Young-Eun Kim said while new media art has yet to be recognised as a genre in Asia, South Korea—home to tech giants like Samsung and LG—has the potential to become ‘the epicenter of new media art’.

The coastal city has hosted the annual Busan International Film Festival since 1996 and Busan Biennale since 1998.

Creators with work on display will include Korean American artist Jin Meyerson, Korean painter Lee Bae, and digital artist Refik Anadol.

The fair is modelled after its counterpart, Loop Barcelona, which launched its video art-dedicated events in 2003.

Loop Barcelona Founding Co-Director Emilio Álvarez said Loop has long been interested in Asia’s vital and creative art scene.

‘We are thrilled to launch the first Loop Lab edition in Asia, with Busan as its starting point,’ he said. —[O]
