Frieze has announced expanded programming for its Seoul fair.
The third edition of Frieze Seoul will include a new performance art section, films shown at Ewha Womans University, and a series of events developed with non-profits and Arts Council Korea (ARKO).
New section Frieze LIVE will feature seven Korean artists exploring the role of poetry in performance art. The section is curated by Je Yun Moon, Director of Art Sonje Center.
Among the highlights is a ritual by Cha Yeonså inspired by Kim Eon Hee‘s poetry and a performance of Yvonne Rainer’s dance Trio A (1968) reinterpreted by Kim Wonyoung and Project YYIN and performed in wheelchairs.
Time-based media works by more than 20 artists will feature in the fair’s film section, a collaboration with outdoor media art festival EMAP (Ewha Media Art Presentation).
Curated by National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art‘s Joowon Park and Tate Modern‘s Valentine Umansky, EMAP x Frieze Film 2024 will feature works by artists including Alison Nguyen, Zhang Xu-Zhan, and Zheng Bo.
This year’s talks programme includes a session on how biennials shape the art scene and art market with panelists Binna Choi (Curator, Hawai’i Triennial 2025), Zeynep Öz (Curator, Sharjah Biennial 16) and Philippe Pirotte and Vera Mey (Co-artistic Directors, Busan Biennale 2024).
There’s also a conversation between Los Angeles-based artist Kang Seung Lee and Hammer Museum curator Pablo José Ramírez.
Frieze also hopes to use the occasion of the fair to boost 16 nonprofits, including Museumhead in Seoul, Space Heem in Busan, and Overlab in Gwangju.
‘With concurrent biennials in Busan and Gwangju this year, we are excited for what September has in store,’ said Patrick Lee, director of Frieze Seoul.
