Para Site Announces New Board Leadership
The Hong Kong institution names Alan Lo as Board Chair after board retirements and transitions. Save to My Ocula
Hong Kong’s renowned non-profit art space, Para Site, has announced a change in its board leadership, with Alan Lo set to assume the role of Board Chair from February 2025.
The appointment follows the retirements of Chair Alan Lau and Vice Chair Mimi Chun—the latter stepping down to focus on new personal and professional pursuits, while Lau remains on the board.
The transition heralds another cycle for an institution that has evolved markedly since its establishment in 1996. A seasoned entrepreneur and dedicated art patron, Lo has served as a board member since 2015, with experience on influential panels, such as the Tate Asia Pacific Acquisition Committee and as former Chair of the Board of Design Trust in Hong Kong, among others.
Lo has highlighted the institution’s role as ‘a critical laboratory for new innovations’, where ‘new talents are given their first institutional exhibitions in Asia Pacific, and where new curatorial or artistic practices are debuted’.
Alan Lau has served on the board since 2009 and assumed the co-chair role in 2014, overseeing Para Site’s relocation and the staging of landmark survey shows, both in-house and internationally. His tenure also saw collaborations with institutions such as MoMA PS1, Kathmandu Triennale, and Kadist.
On the announcement of the news, Lau highlighted Para Site’s artist-led origins, established ‘by seven Hong Kong artists dedicated to exhibition-making and commissioning’ and noted that it ‘occupies a special place in the arts ecosystem of Asia Pacific and beyond’.
Mimi Chun, who joined the board in 2014 and later served as Vice Chair, was instrumental in expanding the organisation’s exhibition capacity. Her departure marks the conclusion of a chapter in Para Site’s evolution.
Last year, Para Site welcomed three new board members, marking a shift from local Hong Kong experts to peers drawn from East and Southeast Asia. Alongside this fresh leadership, their combined regional expertise and international prominence are expected to enhance connectivity and guide Para Site into its next dynamic phase.
