Sasha Gordon has joined mega-gallery David Zwirner, who will co-represent her with Matthew Brown in Los Angeles.
The New York painter is the youngest artist on Zwirner’s roster—a title previously held by abstract painter Emma McIntyre, 33, who entered the gallery’s ranks in February.
Gordon held her first solo exhibition at Matthew Brown in 2021, a year after graduating Rhodes Island School of Design. In 2022, she had her New York debut at Jeffrey Deitch followed by a solo at Stephen Friedman in London and ICA Miami in 2023.
‘I saw Sasha Gordon’s work for the first time late last year at the ICA in Miami,’ Zwirner said. ‘I felt that I was in the presence of an artist of our time and for our time, an entirely new voice.’
Gordon’s self-portraits conveys her anxieties as a queer, biracial woman, growing up in the mostly white town of Somers, New York, by placing their subjects in visibly uncomfortable or surreal settings.
‘I always felt like I had to assimilate and fly under the radar to keep myself safe,’ the Polish-Korean artist told Dazed. ‘Creating these bizarre scenes with women that look like me doing things that aren’t normally accepted by Asian people shows that we are more than a monolith and one-dimensional,’ Gordon said.
The strength of Gordon’s work is reminiscent of the artist’s friend and peer, painter Amanda Ba, whose self-portrait Bulls and Bitches (2021) recently illustrated the cover of Art in America. Both are similarly explicit in their visualisation of strong sentiment and power imbalance.
Zwirner will bring Gordon’s work to Frieze London next month. A debut exhibition of her work will be held at the gallery’s 19th street location in New York in September 2025. —[O]
