Sydney Biennale to Reignite White Bay Power Station
By Zian Chen – 5 April 2025, Sydney

Last year’s Biennale of Sydney broke records with a newly refurbished industrial site welcoming some 174,000 visitors.

And now with the 25th edition of the fair set to kick off from 14 March to 14 June next year, organisers hope to recapture that excitement.

Along with the return of the former coal plant as a venue, early details of the fair announced in late March include the appointment of Bruce Johnson McLean as the next Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain First Nations Curatorial Fellow.

McLean, a leading advocate for First Nations art and culture, is a member of the Wierdi people of Wribpid with over 25 years of curatorial experience.

With previous roles including Assistant Director of First Nations at the National Gallery of Australia and Curator of Indigenous Australian Art at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, he succeeds artist Tony Albert, who inaugurated the position in 2023.

Biennale of Sydney CEO Barbara Moore was delighted to welcome McLean, saying ‘his experience, knowledge, and deep connection to First Nations art and culture will be invaluable in shaping a compelling and thought-provoking edition in 2026.’ —[O]
