By Simon Fisher – 16 August 2022, Shanghai

A former student of Yoshitomo Nara, Javier Calleja‘s success continues to prove the level of demand for figurative work with a pop-art aesthetic.

With his biggest audience in Asia, Almine Rech hosts Calleja’s second exhibition with the gallery in Shanghai, on show until 17 September.

Born in Málaga in 1971, Calleja received his BFA from Granada University in 2000, and completed further art studies while he was training as a gymnast for the Olympics.

Since 2000, the artist has developed a practice across sculpture, painting, and drawing featuring wide-eyed figures that incorporate witty segments of text.

Calleja has had numerous solo exhibitions at galleries around the world, including Bill Brady in Miami in 2020, Dio Hora in Mykonos in 2019, and Galerie Zink in Wadkirchen in 2018.
