Institution School Launches ‘Decolonized History of Art’ Course
A new 12‑week online course designed by the Italian academy ‘reframes the 20th and 21st centuries as a field of multiple, connected histories.’ Save to My OculaOn 17 January, Institution School launches Decolonized History of Art: Global Narratives from 1900 to the Present, a 12-week online course that marks one of the first sustained efforts to articulate a truly global history of modern and contemporary art. Structured across 24 live-streamed lessons (with recordings available), the programme reframes art history as a constellation of parallel and intersecting narratives rather than a single, Western trajectory.
From early avant-gardes to postwar modernisms, from decolonial and feminist practices to contemporary digital and ecological research, the programme reframes the 20th and 21st centuries as a field of multiple, connected histories. It examines how artistic practices developed worldwide through parallel, intersecting, and often conflicting trajectories, shaped by colonialism, independence movements, political struggle, social transformation, and technological change.
The international faculty brings together Charles Esche, R. Siva Kumar, Samantha A. Noël, Eileen Legaspi-Ramirez, Christian Kravagna, Shukla Sawant, Nada Shabout, Natalia de la Rosa, Midori Yoshimoto, Barbara London, Beáta Hock, Raphael Chikukwa, Gaudêncio Fidelis, Morad Montazami, Viktor Misiano, Nicolas Bourriaud, Anda Rottenberg, Tandazani Dhlakama, Đỗ Tường Linh, Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Pauline J. Yao, Caroline Vercoe, Junghyun Kim, and Ute Meta Bauer.
Designed for art professionals, students, and researchers, the course is held in English with on-demand recordings available. A New Year promotion (full package) is available until 10 January, with a discounted fee for students under 26 and participants from lower-middle and low-income countries.
