Press Release

A solo exhibition of new work by Elizabeth Peyton (b. 1965) will be presented at the historic Ryosokuin Temple in the Gion district of Kyoto, Japan. Ryosokuin is a subtemple of Kyoto’s oldest Zen Buddhist temple. Organised by David Zwirner, the exhibition will include a selection of paintings and works on paper by Peyton. Presented in the temple with site-specific works, this will be the artist’s first solo show in Japan since her 2017 exhibition Elizabeth Peyton: Still Life, held at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.

Founded in 1358, Ryosokuin is a temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. It was established by Zen Master Ryuzan Tokken, who inherited the Rinzai school’s Oryo lineage. In the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, tea ceremonies and art have long served as objects of Zen contemplation. A number of site-specific contemporary art exhibitions have been staged within Ryosokuin’s walls.
