Kukje Gallery will participate in the 16th edition of Korea International Art Fair (hereafter KIAF), which will open with a VIP Preview on September 20 and take place from September 21 to September 24, 2017, in halls A and B at COEX, located in Samseong-dong, Seoul. Organized by the Galleries Association of Korea, 161 galleries from 31 countries will participate in KIAF 2017. Kukje Gallery will showcase works by Korean artists such as Kim Yong-Ik, Gimhongsok, Ahn Kyuchul, Haegue Yang, Lee Kwang-Ho, Wook-kyung Choi, and Kyungah Ham, along with those by Dansaekhwa artists including Lee Ufan, Park Seo-Bo, and Ha Chong-Hyun. On display will also be works by international artists including Donald Judd, Michael Joo, Bill Viola, Anish Kapoor, Ugo Rondinone, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Jenny Holzer, Julian Opie, and Candida Höfer.
Kim Yong-Ik (b. 1947) will occupy the center of the Kukje Booth with two works, Closer... and Closer... (1994) and a more recent piece Thinner... and Thinner... #16-61 (2016). The artist will be the subject of a two-part solo exhibition this fall at the Korean Cultural Centre UK in London and Spike Island in Bristol.
Two works titled I Will Meet You on Thursday (1975) and Untitled (1977), by Wook-kyung Choi (1940 -1985) will also be on display. Choi was featured in a major solo exhibition at Kukje Gallery last year. Her works are currently on view in a solo exhibition at Tina Kim Gallery in New York through October 21, 2017.
Also on display will be a work from Kyungah Ham's (b. 1966) iconic Chandeliers series, along with new works from her SMS series including 36. Needling Whisper, Needle Country / SMS Series in Camouflage / Big and pretty eyes wink at Arinamin (2017) and 88. Needling Whisper, Needle Country / SMS Series in Camouflage / Imaginary Forms and Piracetam (2017). Ham and Gimhongsok (b. 1964) are both exhibiting at the Culture City of East Asia 2017 Kyoto: Asia Corridor Contemporary Art Exhibition through October 15, 2017, at the Kyoto Art Center and Nijo Castle in Kyoto, Japan.
Kukje Gallery's booth will also feature four works by Julian Opie (b. 1958), including a LED wall-mounted banner piece titled Detective and Student (2015) and another animation on LCD screen Jeremy and Sian walking 3 (2015). Opie has held solo exhibitions at Kukje Gallery in 2009 and 2014 and will be the subject of an upcoming solo exhibition at the Suwon Ipark Museum of Art from September 28, 2017, to January 28, 2018.
The installation at KIAF will also preview Michael Joo's (b. 1966) work prior to his solo exhibition at Kukje Gallery opening November 30, 2017. Joo's work explores identity based on his own cross-cultural experience of growing up in America as a Korean-American as well as his avid interest in biology—a subject the artist studied in university and continues to use as a conceptual framework. Utilizing diverse materials including silver nitrate and sodium, and ingredients derived from human secretions such as tears and sweat, Joo investigates the physical basis of life and the way the circulatory system metabolizes natural energy. His art frames these essential processes, analyzing the human existence by way of empirical deductions. On display will be Joo's Untitled (Pleochroic) (2016).
